Ending The Financial Year With a Blast!

Image
So June has come to an end and  we hold our AGM on 28th July so pop that date into your diaries!!! MEMBERSHIP FOR 2018-19 can be paid any time now please.  A big thank you and congratulations to Natalie Castree for organising the student exhibition "Carving Our Own Way -3".  A full house on Friday morning for the opening and many red dots in place.  Earlier in the year we had some discussions about how to give back to our artist community and decided to provide a bus for people to go and see  'Colours of Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay' at the  Art Gallery of South Australia ... The bus trip to see the work by impressionist artists was a great success. We all learnt quite a bit more about a particular period of art history which saw the emergence of the modern era.  A big thank you to Anne Homes for organising this we thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Botanical Drawing Workshop

The second workshop in June is underway this weekend. Participants welcomed the warm space to work today as it was particularly cold outside. Thanks to Jan for doing such a great job once again.

FROZEN FLORA and JOINING TOGETHER

Image
Our latest exhibitions are off to a great start following the official opening on June 9th. A happy throng of people gathered at the Platform to view the photography by Morgan Dunn and quilts by the Port Augusta Quilters. Thank you to Rebecca Buono who took some photos on the day. Morgan's photos depict flowers frozen in water.  She has tapped into a hidden world that we don't normally see. The quilters pieces are the result of a challenge where the beginning letter of a person's name denotes a colour in the piece. It was a busy day on Saturday with the Felting Workshop coinciding with the opening. Felted bowls proved a popular topic and everyone enjoyed themselves.  Every one made two felted vessels and some made three. Thanks to Pam Stringer for sharing her expertise. We will once again participate in A Brush With Art during September. This is an opportunity for everyone to exhibit some new p...

May Round-up

Image
We had a really productive meeting on Saturday 26th May. Patsy described the benefits from the watercolour workshop and the enjoyment and increased confidence experienced by participants. We have decided to give Eventbrite a trial run with Kerry's workshop to see if it eliminates some of the work that people are undertaking when organising workshops. You can check out the dummy run for the felting workshop   here..   This of course is now full so please don't purchase a ticket ;-))  We are all getting excited for the June Exhibitions so please try to come along to the opening at 10.30am on Saturday June 9th. June 9th is also "Knitting in Public Day"  and Tammy will organise a project for people to participate in. The felting workshop will also take place on this Saturday. The photography group will attend in the morning and take some photos to record the events. Don't forget to send some into the Trans !!!! Sales over May...

Water Colour Workshop with Alan Ramachandran

Image
A huge THANK YOU!!!  to Jenny Bourne and the Wednesday evening painters, in particular, Patsy, Pam, Ruth and Yolanda for pulling this workshop together. The water colour workshop with Alan Ramachandran was great success. Participants met at the Platform Gallery on Saturday 5th May where they learnt about working from light to dark, water to paint ratio, tonal values, texture, composition and more. On Sunday the 6th May everyone met at The Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden to put their new knowledge into action "in the field". Alan has expressed a desire to return and work with everyone again.... just have to work out how to fit everything into our busy schedule.

Associated Groups

Image
As you may be aware we have several associated groups at The Platform Gallery. The Port Augusta Writers recently held a workshop with Stephen Standley   at their usual Thursday afternoon meeting time.  A social lunch at Mumma Lou's cafe set the scene for an enjoyable afternoon. Do you recognise the furniture from the previous gallery ;-] The Textile Artists' day was a hive of industry with a couple of our youngest friends joining in the knitting  and craft FUN!! The "Using your photos to sell work online"  workshop was well attended and there is a possibility there may be another for people who couldn't make it. Just let Georgie know if you are interested. The next workshop with  Alan Ramachandran will take place on 5th and 6th May.  Thanks to Jenny Bourne for organising this.  Alan  is a multi-award winner in his medium of watercolour. Since migrating to Adelaide in 2007 he has won many awards, held 5 solo e...

April is the Turning Point

Image
April is the turning point for the tourist season. The Pichi Richi Train has begun, busloads of tourists are arriving at the station and sales are moving steadily again. April is also the month for Vicki's Dying to Tie exhibition and the Headspace Youth Art competition and exhibition.  The Big Knitting Workshop with Sharron Jones was a great success and we hope that people will take the opportunity to continue their knitting.  Check out ....     Knitting is good for you ;-)) Textile Artists meet every 2nd and 4th Friday at the gallery. This month also provides the opportunity for artists to get a few tips about selling their work online.  Workshop Saturday 21st April.
